insurance advice [Apr. 17th, 2009|04:33 pm]
Working for a company of 3, I don't have group health insurance. Does anyone have any experience with any of the health insurance providers? I'm looking for a pretty basic package.

I'm looking for good ideas for salad toppings.
My two current favourite combinations are salmon and blueberries, and black beans, corn and tomatoes.

Anyone got any favourites that they'd like to share?

Someone from here posted a link about Free Rice which is a brilliant way to waste time. They now have other subjects available, from chemical symbols to languages to art history. Just thought you folk would like to know.

Also, for those of you who haven't heard, I'm moving home sometime between now and the first week of December. No idea where I'm going to end up, but I'll be local for at least a little while.

The End.

This article presents some interesting thoughts on who we are as a (Western)culture and even an idea about why.

thunking about other theatre stuff [Jul. 16th, 2007|10:38 pm]
I've been meaning to write a post of this sort for some time now, but I've not gotten to the point of procrastinating enough to do it until now. As some of you may have figured out, I've been doing some stuff with a local theatre company here, and it's been a really interesting experience since, although I've worked with a few different companies before, they do tend to be rather inbred and, therefore, rather similar.
There are some very odd differences. For example, tonight, 3 weeks before opening night, the director actually started directing. Until now, it's been basic blocking. It's a 50 minute show and it took us 8 hours to do the coarse blocking...and then we had to do most of it again because no-one had bothered to write it down. We don't do line notes of any sort. During rehearsals, although we have a stage manager there, they just watch the show and anyone who happens to have a book in their hand at the time gives a line if someone needs it, or often the person acting opposite the needer in the scene.
During the run, the stage manager is the prop person, basically. No-one is calling the show, and the light and sound people just have to figure it out themselves. The last show we did, there was no organization to scene changes; the stage manager literally told us to "just go out there and pick up whatever needs moving". Umm, scariest scene changes ever!
However, they're a wonderfully friendly and fun group, and there is quite a bit of serious talent there, which results in some good shows. The one we're currently doing looks like it might come off reasonably well, if we can stop corpsing each other.
All in all, it has been fun, and it's been great to get back to the theatre. It's something that I apparently can't function without.

Food Help Please? [May. 7th, 2007|05:27 pm]
I have a wonderful problem. I have just moved next door to an oriental store, which has all sorts of interesting things, and I want to make exciting oriental type things. The problem is that I'm not sure where to start. I don't have any special equipment, just a basic saucepan and frying pan. I'm not fussy, I like pretty much any oriental style of food.
Any suggestions?

ooo, look a castle [Apr. 3rd, 2007|10:53 pm]
okay, so lots of people have heard the theory about measuring goldfish memories being 3 seconds long, which results in a lot of "oh look, a castle", "oh look a castle", "oh look a castle" (I'm going with the assumption that people have heard this before, and so explaining it really badly), but it occurs to me that humans can do the same thing in Europe, there are castles everywhere you look!

Things I've learned [Sep. 13th, 2006|07:05 pm]
1) I find having dogs on public transit weird
2) Edinburgh is EXPENSIVE! Everything looks like it is exactly the same price as in Canada, until you realize that it's in pounds and therefore over twice as much. So anything that would be 10 dollars at home is 10 pounds here.
3) I am strangely bothered by coloured kleenex.
4) Sizes in the UK are 1 size larger in number, so a size 12 in Canada is called a size 14 here. This is alright, as the conversion isn't too difficult, but is depressing when you've spent the last 6 months trying to get out of a size 20 and get thrust back into it.
5) The tartan that I've always thought was mine is apparently a fake. There isn't really a Duncan tartan, it's just a messed up version of the Robertson hunting tartan, and isn't really official.

Hmm.

Time for more updates [Sep. 9th, 2006|07:34 pm]
Hello everyone.
Things are still going well on this side of the pond. I've managed to hear my first bagpipes, ride on the top floor of a bus, get the internet in my room working (although there's a firewall that won't let me use real msn or gtalk...grrr...from anywhere on campus, including school computers, school wireless AND my residence room), wander in and out of town a few times (on foot and on the bus), find my family tartan (Duncan) and see the outside of the castle and hollyrood place.

My first roommate is from India and she's super nice. My other roommate still hasn't shown up, so I know nothing about them. There's one other Canadian here at the school and she's also awesome, and I look forward to getting to know her, and having Tim horton's reminiscing parties.

I've definitely become jealous that I'm not at the university of edinburgh; it's one of the nicest campuses in the most amazing locations.

Our school had a city tour for the international students today, so we got to drive around most of Edinburgh. We saw the 4th St. rail bridge which is apparently one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. Beats me as to why, but it was cool and it spans the firth of forth, which is cool. We also got to drive down the royal mile and see lots of things. We heard a lot about architecture and stuff that I don't really remember.

I have yet to find any haggis to eat, so the quest continues.

sailing into the sunrise [Sep. 5th, 2006|01:43 pm]
So I have arrived in Edinburgh and am starting to attempt to settle in. I discovered that I I do in fact have the internet in my room, which will make my life infinitely better. now, if only I could figure out how to make it work. There's wireless in a few places on campus though, so I'm currently using the wireless in the library. It doesn't want to let me log into anything e-mail related though, so you people are hearing from me before my parents and boyfriend. Enjoy!!

Anyway, things are going to be good I think. I'm in a residence apartment with 2 other people that I have yet to meet. My room currently doesn't have a bed, but they assure me that I will have one tonight. We'll see. I have a mattress, and it wouldn't be the first time I'd slept on a mattress on a floor.

The flight over was WONDERFUL. I flew continental, with a lay-over in newark. The flight to newark, which is about 1:20 ish, left right on time and dropped us into newark about 10 minutes before my next flight was starting to board. We landed at the gate beside the one I was leaving from, and when you're flying to the us from canada, you do customs in toronto, so I didn't have to do anything except walk on to the next plane. Newark is a nice airport, and I wouldn't actually have minded spending more time there, which is good because I have about 3 hours between flights when I come home in december.

On the flight into edinburgh, I had the window seat with an empty seat beside me. I slept almost the entire trip (which is good because we landed at 8:10 AM local and I left at 5 PM canada time). The flight attendants were nice, we started our descent just in time to see a gorgeous sunrise and the landing was the best I've ever been on a plane for.

the campus is really little and cute. It's basically one big building, plus the residence buildings. It's really amusing to see classes listed as being held in room 217 with no building name or anything...there only is one room 217.

The library is really nice, and I basically got all unpacked and my room is looking almost like home. I have to go into town tomorrow and get groceries and hangers and such, but otherwise everything is dandy.

I get registered for my classes later tonight, and I've got some things to look up before I get into town, so that's all for now.
